The story written by Sandra Cisneros is called “Eleven”. This story is about a little girl named Rachel whose birthday is ruined by an ugly red sweater. Rachel expresses her credibility just like any other kid. I think Rachel is a credible character because of the way she acts, the way she cannot confront herself to the teacher, and how she is furious with Phyllis Lopez and Felice Garcia. She normally pictures herself as a person whose age changes due to her actions. She is eleven years old, but she thinks of herself as a 3, 5, and a 10 year old. Rachel believes that you always have your younger self inside of you like the layers inside of a tree. Rachel is one character that has a lot of ways of expressing her credibility and the three ways so far are how she acts, says, and feels.
First of all, Rachel is a credible character because she was forced to wear an ugly red sweater that ruins her birthday and didn’t even belong to her. Mrs. Price thought that the sweater was hers because Felice Garcia told her that it was Rachel’s. “ Maybe because I’m skinny, maybe because she doesn’t like me, that stupid Felice Garcia says, “I think it belongs to Rachel.” After that little incident, which was on purpose, Mrs. Price FORCED Rachel to put on that sweater. Rachel can’t even say anything to Mrs. Price without getting herself yelled at. Rachel had no choice.
Secondly, Rachel is credible because she cannot confront herself to Mrs. Price. When Mrs. Price was informed on whom the sweater belonged to, Rachel wasn’t able to even speak when Mrs. Price handed her the sweater. “That’s not, I don’t, you’re not … not mine.” Rachel was finally able to let the words fly out of her mouth, but she was sure that she said the answer in little voice that sounded like the one when she was four. Rachel could not believe that she had to put on the sweater that smells like cottage cheese and one that is filled with germs that aren’t even hers. That is when Phyllis Lopez finally confirmed that the sweater actually belonged to her and that made Rachel so furious and embarrassed, that she takes it off quickly and gives to Phyllis Lopez.
A third reason for why Rachel is credible is because she always does something that any other little kid would do.Rachel's credibility rate proves a lot about her. When her birthday is ruined, Rachel notices that tears start to fall down her cheeks. As she sits there crying her eyes out in front of the whole class, Rachel is convinced that her birthday is ruined. As she cries, she wants this day to be over already and she says, "I want this day to be far, far away." She knows that the sweater does not belong to her, but just like any other eleven year old kid, she just cries and believes that she can't do anything about it. Rachel knows that crying is not the answer, but what else can she possibly do to prove to Mrs. Price and herself that the ugly, filthy, and smelly sweater does not belong to her. I think Rachel knows that her tears can't solve her sweater problem.( poor Rachel.)
In conclusion, Rachel's actions, emotions, and words prove her credibility rate and why she is a credible character. Rachel acts like every other kid and she might even not be like everyone, but she sure acts a lot like most of the eleven year old girls. Rachel's credibility could be relative to anyone that you might know or be really close to. And believe it or not, that person could even be you!
